In this film review, I examine the formal devices and narrative techniques employed in the film Savvusanna sõsarad / Smoke Sauna Sisterhood (Anna Hints, 2023, Estonia, France, Iceland) to evoke a sense of sisterhood. Drawing on the distinctive cultural heritage of Estonia's Võromaa County, the tradition of the smoke sauna emerges as a communal space for women. Here, they share personal stories and experiences with one another – and indirectly with the audience – thereby alleviating the pain associated with aspects of womanhood and motherhood.
