New Issue published: APPARATUS 9 (December 2019)
Now, that 2019 is drawing to a close, we are delighted to present our number 9, consisting of 4 peer-reviewed articles, 8 reviews, and one interview (3 items are in Russian, the rest in English). We are happy to publish in Nr. 9 several film studies articles by young scholars from Belgium as well as Russia, showing different ways of writing about film, different methodologies and very different topics. The first article discusses the term of "Narrative Speed" in 1920s Screenplays (namely the ones used by Eisenstein) and comes from Sergey Ogudov (Gosfil'mofond of Russia): Нарративная скорость в советском киносценарии 1920-х годов Броненосец «Потёмкин» С.М. Эйзенштейна (Сергей Огудов). Anna Andreeva (HSE, Moscow) compared 4 adaptations of Chekhov’s story about the dog “Kashtanka” in Soviet / Russian films by Ol’ga Preobrazhenskaia, Mikhail Tsekhanovskii, Roman Balaian, and Natal’ia Orlova. The third article, by Vesi Vuković (University of Antwerp), directs our attention to the storylines of films which depict women at work in the best known period of Yugoslav cinema (Novi film): the lives of these professionals on screen often end in suicide. We chose an image from Bube u glavi/Bats in the Belfry a.k.a. Bughouse (Miloš 'Miša' Radivojević, 1970) for our homepage.
Michael N. Goddard (University of Westminster) contributed two pieces, one is his article “Art as Energy: Józef Robakowski from the Workshop of Film Form to Video Performance and Energy Recordings” and the other a conversation with Józef Robakowski which took place in Manhattan in 2015. This is the second time an interview was published in Apparatus, this time with a Polish visual artist. The last interview we had was with Russian director and script-writer Natalia Meshchaninova in issue 4.
